't Spectrum is ontstaan uit verzet:
Als gevolg van de Tweede Wereldoorlog is er bij weverij De Ploeg een tekort aan grondstoffen. Om tewerkstelling van het personeel te voorkomen, wordt in 1941 ‘t Spectrum opgericht. Meubels en woonaccessoires vervaardigd uit klein hout en biezen vormen de basis van de eerste collectie. Gerrit Rietveld wordt door ‘t Spectrum directeur Piet Blijenburg benoemd tot lid van de beoordelingscommissie van de collectie.
In the second World War there is a shortage of raw materials at the weaving mill De Ploeg. To prevent their employees to be send for forced employment to Germany, 't Spectrum was founded in 1941. Furniture and home accessories were produced from small wood and rushes. This was the base for the first collection. Director Piet Blijenburg asked Gerrit Rietveld to become a member of the assessment committee of the collection.
In 1954 wordt Martin Visser hoofd van Spectrum’s design afdeling. Gedurende 20 jaar neemt Visser in zijn kielzog grote ontwerpers mee waaronder Friso Kramer, Constant Nieuwenhuys en Benno Premsela. Ook Gerrit Rietveld ontwerpt enkele meubels voor de collectie. De collectie die Visser in 1960 ontwerpt, met de BR 02 slaapbank als bekendste icoon, blijkt een gouden greep en vormt tot op de dag van vandaag de ruggengraat van de Spectrum collectie.
In 1954 Martin Visser became head of 't Spectrums design department. During two decades other famous designer like Friso Kramer, Constant Nieuwenhuys and Benno Premsela were working in the company. Even Gerrit Rietveld designed some items for the collection. The collection which was designed in 1960 by Martin Visser, with the BR02 sleeping bench as the most well-known icon, turned out to be the important break-through and is till today the backbone of the 't Spectrum collection.
